Our Treatment

Physiotherapy, is constantly changing. We know through clinical experience and research evidence that rehabilitation is crucial to a successful recovery after injury. At Shrewsbury Physiotherapy & Orthotics we are committed to keeping up to date with the latest developments in physiotherapy. Everybody has different needs, and so your treatment will depend upon and be tailored to your specific problem(s) and lifestyle needs.

We will treat you and not your scan and as such, two procedures are rarely the same. Your treatment plan will formulated with your involvement and its structure will depend upon the findings of your assessment. We will give you our open, honest and professional opinion on the diagnosis and treatment plan and will include an estimate of the number of sessions you may require. We understand that prevention is better than cure. It is always our goal to provide you with advice and exercises that will help to achieve improved long-term health and well-being throughout your lifetime.

We use the most up-to-date treatments including:

  • Exercise prescription
  • Detailed advice on best management
  • Movement analysis & re-education of movement patterns
  • Manual therapy - mobilisation
  • Pilates - 1:1
  • Sports rehabilitation

  • Gym ball exercise
  • Postural & ergonomic advice
  • Soft-tissue release/massage
  • Taping to facilitate pain relief, positioning and function
  • Orthotics (shoe inserts)

We do not often use electrotherapy as, except in certain circumstances, there is little evidence to show that it works.

If we do not feel that physio is appropriate, we will offer you:

  • Advice regarding appropriate investigations such as scans and x-rays
  • Suggestions regarding onward referral (e.g. surgery or injection therapy) to an appropriate specialist if necessary
  • Recommendation(s) to manage your condition (where possible)

neck Physiotherapy in Shrewsbury

Back and Neck Care

Back and neck pain is extremely prevalent, and has been shown to be the second most common reason for seeking help from a GP, after the common cold. There are many spinal structures that can cause pain and sometimes this pain can radiate into the arms and legs (sciatica). It can be incredibly difficult to establish exactly which structures are responsible. Even with MRI imaging the cause of lower back pain cannot always accurately be diagnosed according to a specific structure.

For this reason, as physiotherapists, we are trained in the most up to date techniques and methods of diagnosis according to a pattern of pain classification system. This can involve grouping your signs and symptoms according to what makes you feel better versus what makes you feel worse and, in simple terms, doing more of what makes you feel better!

To make it a bit more confusing, some cases of chronic lower back pain and sciatica have been shown to continue long after the original cause has cleared. After a long period of exposure to painful stimuli from back pain, certain areas in the brain become ‘super sensitive' even to everyday non painful sensations from the previously irritated structures in the back. This tricks the body into recognising these stimuli as painful even when not. You are probably beginning to appreciate that the lower back can be a minefield. This is where we will make the complex, simple. We will guide you through your rehabilitation in the best way possible. If you suffer from back and neck pain and would like to see a physiotherapist in Shrewsbury, please contact us to book a consultation.

Hypermobility

We all have an innate amount of flexibility. For those who have hypermobility, it can be advantageous for their sport or hobbies, e.g. gymnastics or ballet. For some, having this extra movement can lead to generalised muscle and joint pain.

Physiotherapy intervention can make a real difference through:

  • Restoration of normal joint motion, enhancement of joint stability, proprioception and muscle endurance around hypermobile joints
  • Fatigue management and pacing advice
  • Education on modifying repetitive activities, avoiding and managing work-related injuries and ergonomics
  • Joint protection/positional awareness and postural management
  • Advice on sports and exercise
  • Management of related symptoms such as stress incontinence, postural hypotension, hyperventilation and venous insufficiency
  • Advice on behavioural strategies – pacing, coping and pain management
  • Activity and lifestyle modification to improve self-management and function and reduce disability

Pre-/Post Op Physiotherapy

At some point in our lives we may require an operation as a result of a sporting injury, an accident or simply through normal wear and tear in our joints, ligaments or muscles. Having surgery can be daunting but it can make the world of difference to one's quality of life. Hip replacements can give back mobility and independence that would otherwise have been lost whilst ligament reconstructions can enable a return to sports and hobbies.

However, it is more than just the surgery that allows this. Without the correct pre and post-op rehabilitation, the best surgery in the world can end in disappointment as not only will much of the pre-surgery weakness and altered mechanics remain, there will also be additional pain, swelling and compensation as a result of the surgery itself. In order to the get the desired outcome, all of these factors need to be addressed through specialist before and after care.

Pre-Op

Clinical evidence and our experience show the benefits of exercising before surgery. One of the clinic's main specialities is rehabilitation following orthopaedic surgery. At Shrewsbury Physiotherapy and Orthotics, we are trained and experienced to advise on the most important exercises to do, to prepare for surgery.

Post Op

Having the surgery is only half the battle. Even the simplest of keyhole surgical procedures will traumatise the human body and this should be followed up with a comprehensive rehabilitation programme. Sadly, people are not always referred for physiotherapy routinely, with the unrealistic expectation they will get better on their own. Post-operative rehab is essential for recovery and a return to normal daily activities.

Our experienced physiotherapist will guide and educate you through the process so that together you can maximise your recovery. You will be provided with a step by step management and rehabilitation plan so that you know what to expect and when to expect it. Orthotics prescribed by our Physiotherapist in Shrewsbury

What are Orthotics ?

Orthotics are prescription medical devices that you wear inside your shoes to correct biomechanical foot issues such as problems with how you walk, stand, or run.

If you have been provided with a functional foot orthosis (FFO), or insole, it will have been designed to meet your individual needs.

The FFO is designed to influence your joint mechanics by:

  • Preventing excessive joint motion
  • Correcting a joint position
  • Evenly distributing pressures
  • Accommodating foot shape
  • Affecting neuromodulation

FFOs aim to reduce pain and allow you to maintain an active lifestyle by addressing your specific symptoms.  They take up less room in your shoes than an insole so can be easier to wear. The variations are endless; you may want a smaller pair for dress shoes or a pair just for ski boots, football boots or running spikes. The options are endless. Call for more information.

What Does Bespoke Orthotics Involve ?

You will need an extensive biomechanical assessment to decide the best course of treatment. This then involves casting your feet in plaster of Paris to accurately capture the foot in its optimum position. An individualised prescription is then formulated for you, which is sent with your casts to our cutting edge laboratory. They will produce a highly accurate impression of your feet to which the orthotic prescription is applied. Expect this process to last 2-3 weeks.
